Local Veteran Gets New Roof Just In Time for Veterans Day and the Onset of Winter

Local Veteran Gets New Roof Just In Time for Veterans Day and the Onset of Winter 1200 800 habitatdetroit

An Army Veteran is getting a new roof this week thanks to a partnership between Victors Home Solutions and Habitat for Humanity Detroit. The work will be done on Friday, Nov. 10. During a scheduled lunchtime break that day, Habitat for Humanity Detroit (HFH Detroit) will take the opportunity to award Victors Home Solutions as Habitat for Humanity Detroit’s Corporate Partner of the Year.

The new roof will be installed at 17495 Fleming St. in Detroit at the home of James Jenkins. An Army Veteran, he has called this house home his entire life. He took control of the home after his mother’s passing at the remarkable age of 94. As the costs skyrocketed for home repairs, Jenkins became unable to complete necessary improvements to the home. He applied for HFH Detroit’s Critical Home Repair program, and his enrollment in the program will bring a new roof at no cost to him this week, as well as additional repairs in the future.

Jenkins’ new roof comes through a partnership with HFH Detroit and Victors Home Solutions. For every 100 roof replacements that Victors Home Solutions completes, they donate a roof. Each new roof donated by Victors is made of high-quality materials that come with the company’s leak-free guarantee. The benefits of new roofs are vast, including increased heat retention during winter, water-tight seals to prevent costly interior leaks, and enhancing curb appeal for the neighborhood.

“Today, we’re especially proud to be partnering with HFH Detroit helping James, who has already served us all,” noted Amy Oestreich, Director of Marketing for Victors Home Solutions. “Our military men and women put it all on the line for us, so making sure the roof over their head is the best it can be is the least we can do to say thank you.”

In addition to the new roof, HFH Detroit will name Victors Home Solutions as its Corporate Partner of the Year on Friday. Victors’ impressive new roof initiative coupled with the ever-present need for new roofing in the neighborhoods that HFH Detroit serves has made for a hugely successful partnership. HFH Detroit is extremely grateful for the company’s donations both in the high-quality roofing product but also for their skilled installation to help improve the lives of those living in Detroit.

“Partnering with HFH Detroit and their Veterans Initiative was a natural choice as we both share the same core values,” Oestreich said. “Caring for others and doing what’s right may sound like simple, traditional values, but it speaks to who we are as organizations, and as people. We are honored and grateful for the partnership with HFH Detroit to expand our reach into the community, and for the opportunity to serve those who have served. We look forward to continuing our work with them for many years to come!”

Barton Malow Provides Hands-On Learning Experience While Helping Detroit Homeowners

Barton Malow Provides Hands-On Learning Experience While Helping Detroit Homeowners 1200 800 habitatdetroit

Thirty-five interns at Barton Malow recently gathered to lay new driveways, sidewalks, and a back porch for homeowners in Detroit. The company worked with Habitat for Humanity Detroit (HFHD) on the project and donated the materials and time to make the improvements happen.

The work took place at homes located on Maryland Ave. in Detroit. One home is an existing site that HFHD has been making improvements to recently. That home received a new driveway and front walk. Another project the interns tackled was at a newly built home by HFHD, which now has a driveway, front walk, and back porch landing. Barton Malow interns also aided with wall prep and siding installation at the homes.

The learning experience, which included hands-on training to lay concrete forms and pour concrete, is the latest in the partnership between HFHD and Barton Malow. The company made a generous donation to HFHD earlier this year to further support HFHD’s mission of providing affordable, safe, and quality homes in the City of Detroit.

Home is the Key Recap

Home is the Key Recap 600 400 habitatdetroit

During the month of April, a sense of excitement filled the air as word of Habitat Detroit’s “Home is the Key” campaign spread across the city. Each week, the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers contributed to the perfect blend of hope and community that led us straight into the campaign’s grand finale on April 22nd: A memorable Home is the Key block party event!

On this fun-filled day, we combined forces with our sponsors and volunteers to tackle various homeowner projects right in our community. From renovating properties, to building foundational walls for a new home, to fostering abundance in a local community garden, we were certainly not short of opportunities to make a difference while showing the world the amount of power a home can have—for those in it, and far beyond.

The joy that was felt between homeowners and volunteers on this day was certainly a cause for celebration, so we topped off the event with live music, carnival games, food trucks, and more family-friendly activities for our homeowners, volunteers, and sponsors to enjoy. Having the ability to build and rehabilitate these properties was a gift to all who came to participate, and everyone present was able to learn of a home’s ability to close the wealth gap, provide safety and stability for families, and create prosperous futures for communities at large.

“It is powerful to see what can be accomplished when people come together,” said Stephanie Osterland, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Detroit. “Local businesses, community partners and neighbors rallied behind this community’s transformation and made it happen. For the individuals and families who call Morningside home, the significance of that effort is immeasurable.”

We are so grateful for all who came out to participate and celebrate our Home is the Key campaign. Habitat Detroit’s efforts would not be possible without your support, and your life-changing service and generosity fueled our celebrations at the block party and beyond. With you, the future is bright!

Carhartt Employees Help Improve Homes for Detroiters

Carhartt Employees Help Improve Homes for Detroiters 1200 800 habitatdetroit

Upcoming Building Event Is Coupled with $50,000 Donation from Carhartt

Detroit  – On August 8, employees from Dearborn-based Carhartt will join up with Habitat for Humanity Detroit to build five sheds for families in downtown Detroit. Carhartt is pairing a $50,000 donation to Habitat for Humanity Detroit for the event.

In total, 50 Carhartt employees from across the country are expected to participate. The group will build five sheds for homes with no existing outdoor storage. The sheds will provide a space to protect the homeowners’ property, and lead to better curb appeal in the neighborhood by creating spaces for collections of important outdoor tools and equipment to be stored.

The shed-building event is scheduled for August 8 from 3-7pm, beginning at 14325 Jane Ave., Detroit. When the sheds are finished, the volunteers, Habitat for Humanity Detroit staff, and the homeowners are invited to enjoy dinner together.

While best known for its new home builds, Habitat for Humanity Detroit does much more than that in Detroit. It also teams up with companies like Carhartt, which have a proven commitment to supporting the community, to improve existing homes within neighborhoods. That can mean indoor renovations, new roofing, landscaping, or in this case new outdoor shed storage space.

August’s event and donation marks the latest in a growing line of partnerships between Habitat for Humanity Detroit and Carhartt.
